"Mierkalne’s work „Cradlecodex 42” executed in scagliola inlay refers to the earliest of printed books of the Middle Ages – which layout design replicated the style and type of the hand-written manuscripts. The measures of Mierkalne’s work cites the actual size of Gutenberg’s Bible, which significance in the history of printed matter is difficult to underestimate. Paired with an etching titled “The Illuminator'', Mierkalne reflects on the tradition of print-making and the effect on operational systems we have established today. The seemingly carefree naive figures which Mierkalne chooses to depict, are actually drenched in apocalypse awaiting anxiety. Through the combination of both works, she addresses the life cycle of a graphic figure and comments on the existential weight of a printed form."
